Cornwall Escape to Watergate Bay

I have said many times to those of you that follow our adventures in Cornwall on Instagram that I would get a review up and share the places that we stay.... and I am mindful that I have been terrible at doing just this and have instead replied to all your messages directly.

Well that changed after we recently visited Watergate Bay, I am the worst for not going back to the same property, town or campsite as I love to try new places, however Watergate has just changed all of this....(We booked and paid for the Getaway Break offer our selves!)

I've made no secret of the fact that Porthleven is where I leave part of me after every visit and I hope that one day its a place that I can call home and therefore staying anywhere that isn't in Porthleven was going to be a steep challenge.

Watergate Bay Hotel is still a family run business (can we just appreciate how incredible this is in itself!?) and it is situated just north of Newquay, its Beach is privately owned by them and is expansive which is perfect for kids and dogs!

I am a firm believer of first impressions and the staff didn't disappoint, they were super friendly and encouraged us to go relax and make the most of the hotel even though we couldn't check in until 3 pm.

There is no easy way to break this review down, so I am going to cover each of the areas..

Swim Club

I have stayed with hotels before that will claim to also cater as a Spa, but these guys really do have a beautiful spa area too. Down here you will find the incredible Lounge area, which is basically a quieter grown up space with scenic music, comfortable furnishings and floor to ceiling views.

You have the renowned infinity swimming pool which is a lovely warm temperature, I found a swim after breakfast was good time to get this this to yourself.

Outside you will find the Finnish with the view that no other sauna I know of has! The heat in here was perfect for how much my body ached after Surf lessons. I am not normally one for being in a sauna as I find them quite claustrophobic, but this feeling so open I really enjoyed it.

You will also find the Hot Tub, now don't mistake this as a Jacuzzi it really is a hot tub but I had the pleasure of getting this to myself on a grey mizzly day and happily floated absorbing the atmosphere.

Ahead of our visit we booked in a Drench Facial & a Full Body Massage which we both came out of floating. My husband had asked for no prisoners taken as he ached all over and he said it was the best massage he had ever had. My Facial was very relaxing and my skin was glowing from it. Treatments can sometimes be available during the day but I would recommend getting treatments planned ahead of time to avoid disappointment, especially if you went during peak times.

On the last day that we were here I treated myself to a Speedy Pedicure with Gel Polish and even then you are sat with a view! They use Jessica products and I was really impressed with the treatment despite it being a Speedy one.

The Swim Club is a dog free area and kiddies do have to be supervised.

Living Space

Chances are like us you will have arrived ahead of check in, had a long drive and need to flop your tired body down into a super comfy chair with a g&t. The Living Space has loads of this!

An extensive Gin list is on hand and the view really is as incredible as the website suggests, no trickery has been had. You really can sit here and switch off, my husband even managed to fall asleep whilst we waited for our reservation for lunch at the beach hut.

This area is also very dog friendly (quite often you won't need to ask for water for either you or the furry companion) and also very family friendly.

There is a huge wrap around veranda which is perfect for catching the sunset or the storms.

The Beach Hut

Well this is a special place to say the least! The staff are very helpful and the food is great. We had our first lunch here on the day that we arrived, we had booked ahead of time and I would recommend doing the same. We had a table by the window which was dreamy to sit watching the Kite Surfing whilst we shared a bottle of red wine ( we can recommend the Primitivo!).

The portions are very generous and I think this was possibly the largest lunch I ate in quite some time...We can recommend the Steak and the Squid..

We loved the Beach Hut so much that we returned for lunch on our last day - again we booked a table, this place is rarely empty!

Zacrys

This is located in the main Hotel and where you are able to have Breakfast without a dog, we did eat our Breakfast in the Living Space on the second morning and that was no problem to do so. However as we had the Baby Monitor on for the dog ( I know, I know) we did make sure we had one sitting in here.

Again their is tasty food on offer, its a buffet style and you can eat til you pop, but there is one winner here.... the Waffles!

In the the evenings Zacry's transforms into a candlelit grown up space and for the night that we ate Dinner here again the staff were brilliant and the food was heavenly. They even kindly bought us a glass of Champagne to celebrate Matt's birthday.

Watchful Mary

What a space this is! Newly opened this year and it sounds like it was a challenge given its location right on the Beach... For us it was the perfect spot to just look out to sea with a drink in hand and some picky food. We tried the cheese and hams, the nuts (very moreish!) and Matt loved his cinnamon bun.

The Watchful Mary has a very chilled vibe and everything as you can imagine is set up to take in the view that you are spoiled with at Watergate Bay. It made for a cosy haunt in October and I can imagine this place has a real Ibiza chill out vibe come Summer. We didn't catch the Live music that they have on every weekend as we left on the Friday afternoon - sad times...

We sat and relaxed here after our surfing lesson and had a well deserved cocktail!

The bedroom

We stayed in a Partial Sea View Best and very handily it had access to straight out to the back of the hotel, which was brilliant for walking the dog early in the morning.

The Super King size bed was mega comfortable and the huge bath was nice for a soak in...

You don't need to worry about shower gel, shampoo and conditioners as they are provided and smell amazing... Oh and a hairdryer and iron is supplied!

One thing that would be a nice touch would be a Nespresso machine, I travel a lot with work and see this often.. tea and coffee is provided with fresh milk but you can't beat a espresso.

Would it put me off? No.

Now I didn't get many images of our room, but this is the view... That says plenty right?

Extreme Academy

Now this is something that we really loved! We had a 2 hour Surfing Lesson and whilst we have body boarded, we hadn't ever tried surfing. Its something that we really have wanted to do and I have almost booked it many times for the children on our visits to Cornwall.

Our instructor was brilliant and we both managed to be standing quite quickly, the hardest part we found was swimming back out to catch a wave. Be prepared to ache ALL OVER!

I've been asked "were we cold?", nope! The wet-suits that you are provided with a brilliant and I honestly didn't feel cold even though it was October. In fact the sea is warmer now than it would be in April...

Overall this was probably my favorite, I feel a deep sense of being a home when I am by the sea but have always been a bit scared of being in the sea, despite being a strong swimmer. So for me this was a big deal.

We had planned to record the lesson with a go-pro, but it would have got slightly in the way. Sometimes though not having proof of how something went is a sign of a good time.

For the Kids....

A few asked if Watergate was adults only, nope! You would have thought so, but I can assure you there were lots of toddlers about (we stayed in term time) and I can imagine that in the school holidays you will get a very different vibe here.

That said children are very well catered for with Clubs, Babysitting and a Games room for the older kids.

The Beach

Cornwall is renowned for its Beaches, but if you are looking for a Dog Friendly and Kid friendly beach all year, then you really can't beat Watergate.

We explored and wandered for over an hour and it was heaven!

Final Thoughts....

We would visit again in a heartbeat and will return as soon as we can. It was the perfect escape for us both and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
